which briefly explains the purpose of latter-day temples -- in the words of Church apostles, a Harvard Divinity dean, and a Harvard professor (both nonmembers):
Temples are very sacred places to us, so they are "private" to a certain extent. Those who are not members of the Church are welcomed to quietly walk through new (or newly-renovated) Temples before they are dedicated to the Lord and closed to the general public.
